Week 10: Flipped Classroom

Flipped Classroom is a instructional strategy in which traditional classes are left aside in order to encourage students to be part on their own learning process. Traditional homework is replaced, so that students must watch online lectures, collaborative online discussions, among many other interesting activities.

This tool is quite relevant nowadays because students are used to do everything with their cellphones and computers, therefore, technology must be used inside and outside the classroom.

The limitation of this strategy is quite evident, since we need students's commitment in order to use it and achieve the class' aim. In some schools, students do not complete their assignments if there is not someone with them, therefore, before implementing a strategy like this, students must be able to work autonomously.

The following is a lesson plan, in which this strategy was used. The target students were learners from a private school.

Unit 3: Going places

Context: Class of 22 students from eighth grade of high school in a private school in Valparaíso.

Objectives: Identify new vocabulary related to the theme checking into a hotel in order to create a dialogue

Materials:
  • Video
  • Projector
  • Speakers
  • Google classroom platform
Time:  45 minutes

Activity:
Introduction: The teacher will attach a video in the google classroom platform where students will identify vocabulary related to the topic of checking into a hotel. The visual aid will be listen twice.

Development: The teacher will provide questions to discuss the students’ perception about the video watched. Students will share their view about the topic.
  • What was the video about?
  • What vocabulary did you identify?
With their elbow buddy, students will create a dialogue similar to the video by using google doc. They will have to use the key vocabulary that they collected from the video and later, they will have to upload the doc to the google classroom platform. Once, they receive feedback, students will record themselves and upload the recording to the platform in order to be evaluated.

Closing: The teacher will give feedback.

  1. This is so interesting! I have never heard about this methodology before and I as a teacher of higher grades I think is an excellent way to promote autonomy and take the class time to practice and asses students knowledge!
