Week 10: Flipped Classroom

Imagen
Flipped Classroom is a instructional strategy in which traditional classes are left aside in order to encourage students to be part on their own learning process. Traditional homework is replaced, so that students must watch online lectures, collaborative online discussions, among many other interesting activities. This tool is quite relevant nowadays because students are used to do everything with their cellphones and computers, therefore, technology must be used inside and outside the classroom. The limitation of this strategy is quite evident, since we need students's commitment in order to use it and achieve the class' aim. In some schools, students do not complete their assignments if there is not someone with them, therefore, before implementing a strategy like this, students must be able to work autonomously. The following is a lesson plan, in which this strategy was used. The target students were learners from a private school. Unit 3: Going places ...

Week 9: Gamification

Imagen
Gamification is the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts. For instance, rewarding students with stickers, stars and stamps after completing their tasks.    This is an important tool that can be used in classrooms in order to call student's attention and make them participate. In this case, for instance, Kahoot was used to asses students after the lesson. Kahoot has been a interesting and entertaining tool to work with, because it gives score in every question, so students will play and thinks fast in order to think.  The limitation has to do with the use of internet and the need of having students focus on the activity, otherwise it won´t work, no matter how interesting it is.  The following is a lesson plan made to work with Kahoot. Unit 2: Customs and traditions Lesson plan Context: Class of 22 students from the Third grade of high school in a private school in Valparaíso Objectives: Students will...

Padlet is an application to create an online bulletin board that you can use to display information for any topic. Easily create an account and build a new board. You can add images, links, videos, and more. This application can be used to work with mostly  high school students, since they are expected to have their critical thinking already developed, but the teacher must always monitoring their students in order to guide them and help them in whatever they need.  The following is a lesson plan made to work with Padlet.  Unit 3: Outstanding persons Context: Class of 22 students from a second year of high school in a private school in  Valparaiso. Week 7: Speaking (Whatsapp)

Imagen
Whatsapp is a free application used to send messages, videos, audios and videos. All you need is a smartphone and internet to use it. This application is really useful when it comes to engage students into the practice of English. Whatsapp can be used to record and film activities, something that students like to do. But is necessary to create interesting works, so students will participate actively and they will practice and improve their speaking skills, and not only that, since by recording themselves, students will practice a variety of soft skills such as standing and speaking in front of a small audience, reinforcing body language and self-confidence attitudes. An obvious limitation of this tool is that students get easily  distracted, therefore, we must monitoring the class to check if they are using their cellphone for the activity or doing something else that is not related with the class.    The following is a lesson plan made to use Whatsapp:...

Week 6: Reading (News in levels)

Imagen
News in levels is a page in which you can find different new to work with. The great about this page is that you can find the same new written in different levels of difficulty, so all students will be able to read and understand. This is a excellent page for teachers that need material for their reading classes, since they only need to know their students's level in order to create an interesting activity. I think that students of high school will work better with something like that, since they are older and capable of thinking critically and through this type of activities they will improve their reading skills and writing as well.  A limitation is that you can't work with the first thing you find, you need to find news that call students' attention, otherwise they won´t feel motivated to work. The following is a plan lesson made using this interesting page. Unit 4: Mass Media Context: Class of 25 students from a second year of High School in a sub...
